The Balvenie 12 Year Old Whisky is produced in a family-owned distillery, which has been in operation since 1892. Located in Banffshire, Scotland, in the region commonly known as the Highlands, the whisky undergoes a maturation process called DoubleWood. This designation derives from the two types of wood used, as it matures in both Bourbon and La Frontera sherry casks under optimal conditions.
Each type of oak imparts different notes to the product: the first softens it, while the second adds sweet, raisin-like notes. Gold Medal at the 2002 International Wine and Spirits Competition.
